About Me
My name is Sarah Sheehan, and I grew up in the hills of Massachusetts as a homeschooler with five brothers—running barefoot in the woods, studying edible plants, and consuming books about birth. My mother first sparked my interest in birth work; she loved being pregnant, and described birth as pleasurable, telling me with a glow on her face, “Sarah, you can feel every delicate bone sliding out—it’s exquisite.” When I was 17, I knew I would become a midwife.
My plan was to get a bachelor’s of science at a small college in New Hampshire, and then attend Birthwise Midwifery School in Maine. However, fate threw some curveballs. My microscopic school pulled the science degree halfway through my education, and Birthwise closed. I obtained an English degree instead, and spent my twenties traveling and writing fiction books—living in Italy, Ireland, and Spain.
I had a small piece published and gained some literary attention, but I was discontent. One day, after turning 30, I was watching “Call the Midwife” and my flame reignited, recalling my ambition. I shadowed a midwife in rural Maine, where she was her patients’ only primary care provider, and observed a thirty-hour birth. The way the midwife breathed power into the mother inspired me, and the baby sliding out was breathtaking. Unequivocally, my calling was confirmed.
I returned to Boston and obtained an accelerated bachelor’s of science at UMass. I worked as a labor and delivery nurse for a year, and supported over a hundred births. I loved it—the mini dance parties, getting Brazilian takeout, crying, laughing, and triumphant births. But I started realizing my calling was birth outside the hospital.
I met and became engaged to a wonderful man, who swept me back up to New Hampshire in the winter of 2025. I recently completed my DONA birth doula training, and will start midwifery school at Frontier this fall.
When not doula-ing and studying birth, I spend my time with my fiance, hiking mountains with our two border collie puppies, attempting to garden, baking sourdough, playing DnD, trying out local churches, swimming Walden with friends, scrambling to finish book club books (never do), and painting.
As a person and a doula, my personality is lighthearted, grounded, sunny, nurturing, warm, comforting.
I’m so excited to be serving my new community!
